TEDxEvansStreet HOSTS SECOND EXTENDED SERIES
-South Carolina State University Jazz Band Highlights Jazz as a Change Agent-
(Florence, S.C., April 9, 2019) – – TEDxEvansStreet will host its second TEDx Extended Series April 27, 7:00 PM to 9 PM, at Soulé Cafe in Florence, S.C. This series is a result of attendees expressing their interest to hear more about talks and performances presented. From the 2018 event, themed Change Agents, the South Carolina State University (SC State) Jazz Band will be the highlight for the extended series experience.
“We are excited to be able to showcase one of our 2018 TEDxEvansStreet participants allowing them to expound on what it is to be a change agent,” said Tonita Perry, licensee and lead organizer of TEDxEvansStreet. “The insight that the SC State Jazz Band has into the music genre of jazz being a change agent is fascinating and gives us a glimpse into history to bringing us to the present. It will be informative and entertaining, just as our first event with Coastal Carolina University Cuban Ensemble last year. We are hoping to have two more events before the 2019 TEDxEvansStreet event in the fall.”
The SC State Jazz Band will present an extended talk and performance from 2018 Change Agents highlighting jazz, which is often considered the foundation of modern music. Led by Roland Haynes, Jr., the band will present the evolution and change through the years, not only has jazz music changed in form, but it also has influenced other genres of music and advancement of sound.
“SC State is pleased to participate in the 2018 TEDxEvansStreet extended series. The event provides an opportunity to showcase our students and their musical talents. Our Jazz Band, under Roland Hayne’s direction, has performed for diverse audiences across the southeast. We look forward to sharing the evolution of music through talk and performance with the vast TEDxEvansStreet audience,” said James E. Clark, president of SC State University.
In the spirit of “ideas worth spreading,” TED has created TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. The Florence event is called TEDxEvansStreet, where x = independently organized TED event. At TEDxEvansStreet, TED Talks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. TEDxEvansStreet is an independent TEDx event operated under license issued by TED and is open to the public.
Speakers and performers talk may reach a vast audience on the web. In addition to being posted on TEDxEvansStreet website and YouTube channel, TED will select some TEDx talks to be released online and most are viewed by at least 100,000 people, and some by several million. Indeed, in aggregate, TED Talks have been viewed more than 100 million times worldwide. This exposure has transformed the careers of many TEDx presenters and performers, either by introducing them to larger audiences or recasting them as a thought leader.
TEDxEvansStreet took place on December 6, 2018, in Florence, SC at the SiMT Building on the campus of Florence-Darlington Technical Community College, where speakers and performers presented “ideas worth spreading” based on the theme Change Agents.
